Baltimore, Maryland is a city that keeps reinventing itself. Through the course of its history it
has seen affluence, power, wars, poverty, renewal and prestige. Today it combines its aristocratic heritage and
Colonial era historical importance with all the contemporary character of a modern urban global city.
Baltimore, to me, is like a miniature New York City. The hustle and bustle, tourists, and museums
are there, but the city seems more inviting to an inexperienced traveler. When visiting the downtown Inner Harbor
area, one can travel to many hotspots and places of interest via walking, taxi, or even water taxi. There are
several shopping complexes that also boast great restaurants and cafes. Some nationally known businesses are in
this part of town like ESPNZone, Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, and Cheesecake Restaurant. A quick trip to the Baltimore
Aquarium or Columbus Science Center can enhance your mind and excite your senses. Many colleges are within and
nearby in surrounding suburbs of the city, if you have teens who want to attend a great school. To the north on
Interstate 95 are more rural counties and the direction of Philadelphia.
When traveling southbound on the same route, Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., and Virginia
are not too far (about one hour away). Montgomery County has just about everything you can imagine including
government establishments, suburban life abounding, state parks, and accommodations for trendy lifestyles.
The Inner Harbor is the center of tourist activity, with plenty of shops and restaurants set in
quaint, maritime surroundings. From here one can also access Baltimore’s outdoors adventures. The Baltimore Beach
is in Inner Harbor, with 1,000 tons of sand for castles, sunbathing and volleyball. Anglers can arrange chartered
fishing here, as well as sea duck and goose hunts. There are lots of options for sailing tours. The Baltimore
Maritime Museum gives tours aboard several naval ships, including the USS Constellation, the only remaining Civil
War era sailed ship. Harbor Sailing L.L.C. gives passengers the option of sitting back and enjoying the historical
sights or lending a hand to hoist the sails.
History buffs of every stripe will find something of interest in Baltimore. The Edgar Allen Poe
Museum is right around the corner from the author’s grave in Westminster Cemetery. The Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
is a must-see for Bambino fans. The Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine lets guest tour the fort
that saved Baltimore from the British in the War of 1812. When poet Francis Scott Key was held prisoner off the
coast, Fort McHenry’s brave defense inspired him to write our national anthem.
The Baltimore Zoo’s Children’s Zoo is considered the best in the country. Walters Art Gallery is
marvelous, and exhibits millennia of art from around the world. Gay and Lesbian visitors to Baltimore will find
some great clubs and bars in Mt. Vernon. Rent a limo in Baltimore (MD)!
