Due to several mapmakers misunderstandings of the Indian name 'Hobe' the town was misnamed Jove on
an early map and from Jove to 'Jupiter' on another, later map. Jupiter is the Roman god of light, sky and weather
and Jupiter, Florida is the only town in America to have such a name. It inspired a neighboring village to name
itself "Juno Beach". Florida Atlantic University's MacArthur Campus is located in Jupiter it is also the location
of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. Hollywood star Burt Reynolds even once called Jupiter his Florida
home.
Jupiter, Florida, in Palm Beach county, is 15 miles N of West Palm Beach, Florida (center to

Jupiter History
In the early days, the area was inhabited by the Jega and Hobe Indians. Beginning around 1550 the
area has served as a prominent location for guiding ships. Explorers regarded this extension out into the Atlantic
Ocean as a significant landmark while planning their trips to Central and South America. During the early part of
the 20th century logging, fishing, pineapples and citrus were important factors for the economy.
