Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota, with a population in the greater metro area of approximately 150,000. Located in the southeast corner of the state, it is not just a pass through on the way to the beautiful Black Hills but a destination in its own right. Sioux Falls has many riches that make it unique -- from parks to culture, entertainment, shopping, sports and music.

It is home to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra; the Washington Pavilion of Arts & Science; its namesake Falls Park which includes not only the Falls, but also the Wells Fargo Sound & Light Show, the Horse Barn Arts Center, and biking and hiking trails along the Big Sioux River; the Sioux Falls Convention Center; the downtown public sculpture exhibit SculptureWalk; the Center for Western Studies; the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History; the Outdoor Campus; the Sertoma Butterfly House; and the Old Courthouse Museum.

The downtown retains its historic charm and is full of unique shopping as well as art galleries and studios. The renovated 8th & Railroad Center also boasts beautiful shops and eateries.  In addition to many city parks, there are several family-centered theme parks. Throughout the year you will also find many special events and festivals -- more information and specific dates on these can be found at the Sioux Falls CVB website; Downtown Sioux Falls website; or the Sioux Empire Arts Council website.

Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota, and has an appropriately large variety of activities and attractions. If you’re bored in Sioux Falls, then you’re just not trying.

Like almost any city in the western U.S., Sioux Falls has plenty to keep history-buffs interested. Visitors can take any number of self-guided historic walking tours that will show them around Sioux Falls while it teaches them its history. Attractions like Buffalo Ridge Cowboy Ghost Town will amuse and entertain, but more serious-minded history lovers will probably want to check out the Center for Western Studies or the Old Courthouse Museum and its Plains Indians display. Those that need a break from cowboys and Indians can stop by the Delbridge Museum of Natural History and enjoy its fascinating collection of mounted wildlife dioramas.

Art and theater lovers can find both at The Washington Pavilion, which is the home of the Visual arts center and the Husby Performing Arts Center. The Orpheum Theater in downtown Sioux Falls is a neat place to catch a show. A unique attraction for visitors from the east is The Northern Plains Gallery, which features the work of Native American artists.

Out-door adventures are available in and near Sioux Falls. You can admire the rugged beauty of the South Dakota countryside from the air via balloon rides from Prairie Sky, inc., or by water on a Jesse James Pontoon Ride through the Split Rock River. Skiers will have a blast at Great Bear Recreation Park. Falls Park, featuring the natural waterworks that give the city its name, is a perennial favorite for nature lovers.

There are many options for family fun, like the Wild West Family Fun Park or Gigglebees restaurant. There are also a number of nightspots for adult visitors, such as the Royal River Casino & Hotel, or Nitwits Comedy Club. Neither families nor singles/couples need worry about finding a place to stay; Sioux Falls is tourist friendly enough that anything from campgrounds to B&B’s is abundantly available.
